"Connecting through communication creates a sense of comfort, comfort creates trust, and trust creates buy-in" ~Lynsey Charles, 2013 How is your educational philosophy like motherhood? My educational philosophy actually came from what I understand about being a mom. I had to embrace [motherhood] at such a young age - not being that far removed from childhood helped me attune to my son’s needs. He taught me that he wasn't going to learn from someone who didn't know or inspire him; thus my philosophy became: know students, inspire them with the possibilities of literacy, then teach them the content. How do you define leadership? Empowering people to push the limits of their potential through the reinforcement of strengths and refinement of weakness. Through that lens, how have you been lead? Leaders inspire me in one breath and challenge in me the next. They make me own my strengths and shine light on something that needs growth -- all the while, strategically, increasing my capacity to lead. | How did your favorite leader create buy-in? When I was very young, my pastor had the ability to tell stories during sermons that I still remember to this day. Real life stories that coincided with the bible, or masterfully engaging stories from the bible that came to life. Either way, by the end of his sermon, I can remember being tearful and feeling so moved, wanting to make a difference in the world, but not knowing how [other than] to say, 'just use me.' And I know that it was his compelling story telling that took me there. What else? He created buy-in with his ability to connect to all aspects of the profession. Fascinating! Please unpack that for us... Well, he communicated purpose to those that needed to be motivated; to those that were motivated, he kept them involved, and committed to the process. He fluently spoke the financial, business, and ministerial languages. He understood every audience he had to Sheppard. Now that I think about it, he connected with his people through communication, the communication created a sense of comfort, that comfort created trust, and the trust created buy-in. *Chef Reggie prepared this interview to horseradish consistency – potent and profound. |
